How to choose a custom figure: 3 ways to make one, compared

Short answer

There are three main ways: commission a handmade figure from an artist, get 3D-scanned at a studio, or have one 3D-printed from a photo. Choose by budget, lead time and whether you only have photos. FigMee makes figures from a single photo, with a free preview before you order.

Want a figure of yourself, your family or your pet? Here's how to choose.

Three ways to get one

Method What you need Typical price Typical lead time Best for
Commission an artist Several photos, back-and-forth From a few hundred dollars 1 to several months A unique handmade style
3D scanning studio Visiting in person From a few hundred dollars Several weeks Maximum realism
From a photo (FigMee) One photo 6cm $65 / 8cm $99 / 10cm $129 3–4 weeks An easy start, pets, or when only photos exist

Five things to compare

  1. How many photos: some methods need a visit or photos from every angle. FigMee works from one front-facing photo. See photo requirements.
  2. Can you see it before ordering: FigMee lets you preview the result for free first.
  3. Style: cute chibi, anime or realistic. Compare the styles.
  4. Size and number of people: will it fit where you want it, and can two people or a pet share one figure? See sizes and two people and pets. Two people are 1.5×, realistic style is 2×.
  5. Lead time: for birthdays or holidays, count back from the date.

Options besides a figurine

No shelf space? A fridge magnet or bag charm is a smaller option.
