Can I make a figure from a coming-of-age or 18th/21st birthday photo?

Short answer

Yes. One photo is enough for a figure designed to look like the person — a furisode kimono at Japan's Seijin-shiki, a suit, or an 18th or 21st birthday outfit. If you have a pre-ceremony portrait, you can even have it ready for the day. You can check a free preview before ordering.

Which photo should I use?

  • A studio or pre-ceremony portrait is ideal: full-body, clear face, the whole outfit in view.
  • A photo from the day works too: if it's a group shot, crop around the person before uploading.
  • Show the whole outfit. Patterns, sashes and hair ornaments that are visible are easier to carry over.

How much pattern detail can you keep?

Colors and large patterns carry over, but fine embroidery and tiny motifs are simplified at palm size. For more detail, choose a larger size or the realistic style (figures only, 2× the price).

Who is it for?

  • For the person themselves: a keepsake of turning 18, 20 or 21.
  • For parents or grandparents: a thank-you for getting them here.
  • For friends: a photo of two friends can become one figure (up to two people, 1.5× the price).

When should I order?

Delivery takes 3–4 weeks. In Japan, Coming of Age Day is the second Monday of January, so order by early December to allow for the year-end rush. For a birthday, order about a month ahead. Figures are 6cm $65 / 8cm $99 / 10cm $129; shipping is $7.
